2011-08-25 - OMEGA at the top of the data transfer gameResearchers in Europe have successfully developed a new transfer technology for video data. An outcome of the OMEGA project, the team transferred data at an extremely fast rate of 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) without any losses. OMEGA ('Home gigabit access') was funded under the 'Information and communication technologies' (ICT) Theme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) to the tune of EUR 12.41 million. This latest technology could be brought to market a lot sooner than expected.

2011-08-03 - Genetic risk factors for restless legs syndrome identifiedAn international research team has discovered the genetic risk factors for restless legs syndrome (RLS), a disorder that triggers unpleasant sensations in people's legs at night. The study, presented in the journal PLoS Genetics, highlights how carriers of risk variants have a stronger chance of developing RLS. Researchers say the findings could help fuel more investigations on this disorder, potentially leading to new and improved treatment methods.

With a boost of EUR 1,902,150 of funding as part of the 'Small ligands to interfere with Thymidylate synthase dimer formation as new tools for development of anticancer agents against ovarian carcinoma' (LIGHTS) project under the 'Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health' Thematic area of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), the researchers developed peptides that act by a novel inhibitory mechanism and curb cancer cell growth in drug resistant ovarian cancer cells.
Más información2011-08-10 - Gene discovery in truffle dogs could help children with epilepsyA new epilepsy gene found by an international team of EU-funded researchers in Lagotto Romagnolo dogs, known for their gift for truffle hunting, could be a new candidate gene for human benign childhood epilepsies characterised by seizure remission. The gene, LGI2, was found by an international team led by scientists from the University of Helsinki and the Folkhälsan Research Center in Finland. Although dogs are less genetically complex than humans, they suffer from the same diseases; any discoveries made by scientists about a dog's gene could be relevant to human health too. This finding was made as part of research supported by almost EUR 12 million of funding from the European Commission through the 'Unravelling the molecular basis of common complex human disorders using the dog as a model system' (LUPA ) project, part of the Seventh Framework Programme 's (FP7) 'Health' Theme.
Más información2011-08-10 - Human gene regulation mechanism discoveredScientists from Germany, Spain and France say you must transcribe a protein-coding gene into ribonucleic acid (RNA) and in the 'splicing process' shortened to the correct template if you want to produce proteins. In their latest study, presented in the journal Nature, the researchers provide new insight into how the U2AF protein enables this process. The research was funded in part by three EU projects with a combined total of EUR 25.4 million under the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).
Más información2011-08-22 - Scientists find elusive gene responsible for rare congenital diseaseA Franco-British team of researchers has discovered a mysterious gene responsible for the extremely rare congenital Grey Platelet Syndrome that causes a bleeding disease. Only 50 cases have been reported to date. The team hopes that the results of their study will lead to the development of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) test able to diagnose the disease. The findings are published in the journal Nature Genetics.
Más información2011-08-24 - Tests underway for new HIV drug farmed from GM tobacco plantsA clinical trial of a potential Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) drug farmed from genetically modified (GM) tobacco plants has at long last got underway in the United Kingdom. The beginning of the trial follows several years of regulatory negotiations, and is being carried out by the EU-funded PHARMA-PLANTA ('Recombinant Pharmaceuticals from Plants for Human Health') consortium, an international group of 28 academic institutions and 4 small companies. The antiviral preventative P2G12 antibody drug that has been synthesised by GM tobacco plants is being tested on a small number of women in the United Kingdom to establish whether it is safe or not. The first phase of the trial, which kicked off in June, involves testing the safety of the vaginally-applied antibody called P2G12 in 11 healthy women. The results from these tests are expected in October and could bring the science world closer to the development of affordable HIV treatments. The antibody recognises proteins on the surface of HIV to block infection, although it hasn't yet proven to be effective in humans.

2011-08-01 - Management plans to help boost Baltic Sea seal and cod numbersGrey seals (Halichoerus grypus balticus) and cod may have swum in close quarters in the Baltic Sea a decade ago, but this is no longer the case. The heavy decline in their numbers has forced them apart; the remaining grey seals populate the northern parts of the Baltic while the cod has found a niche in the southern parts. New research, funded in part by the EU with a combined support of more than EUR 23 million, shows how management plans could help boost both these populations in the Baltic Sea, enabling a mix back into the fold, where the cod could resurge in the northern parts and the grey seals could make their way south again. The findings, published in the journal PLoS ONE, suggest that fisheries and climate change will have a heavier impact on the cod than on the grey seals.

Presented in the journal ZooKeys, the study reveals how the genus Philanthaxia, which was first described by Deyrolle in 1864 with Philanthaxia curta and later revised by Czech scientist Svatopluk Bílý in 1997, is primarily Oriental in distribution except for a couple of species whose reach touches the Australasian region. Because of their discovery, the total number of species belonging to the genus Philanthaxia now stands at 65.

Presented in the journal BioScience, the study highlights the historical effects of organic acids and power station emissions, focusing on the decrease in acidification of Swedish lakes in the last two decades. Researchers and policymakers in the 1970s and 1980s expressed concerns about how the acidic emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, generated by power plants, impacted the environment. These worries led to the development and implementation of controls. Specifically in Europe, the concerns focused on how the myriad lakes in Sweden were affected by these emissions. Some experts had even found a number of cases to be noticeably acidic. Officials in Stockholm then instituted a programme to counter the acidification of the lakes by adding thousands of tonnes of lime.

A new international research study led by The Open University in the United Kingdom investigated this by getting more than 6 000 people in 15 European countries to observe banded snails in open public spaces and in their gardens. The findings, published in the journal PLoS ONE, suggest that other selective agents, such as predation pressure, are responsible for the change, and how this latest information sets a benchmark for future studies of evolutionary change.

The results, presented in the journal PLoS ONE, support the theory that combining more N. ceranae with a high pesticide content in beehives could contribute to colony depopulation. Some 70 000 professional and amateur beekeepers work with honeybees (Apis mellifera) in France. Experts and laypersons recognise how important a role bees play in our environment, particularly on the sound functioning of the planet's ecosystems and agricultural productivity. But bee colonies have been dealing with a mysterious disease in recent years that triggers the disappearance of thousands of colonies each year. No one knows why this is happening.

2011-08-26 - New EU-funded project to tackle improving nutrition among those at risk of povertyToday in Europe many nutritional foodstuffs remain a luxury commodity and are not affordable for everyone in society. In light of this, a new EU-funded project that hopes to tackle the resulting poverty-related nutritional problems has just got underway. CHANCE ('Low cost technologies and traditional ingredients for the production of affordable, nutritionally correct foods improving health in population groups at risk of poverty'), part of the Seventh Framework Programme's (FP7) 'Food, agriculture and fisheries, and biotechnology' Theme, aims to bring researchers and industry partners together to develop appealing, affordable and healthy food products that could prevent common nutritional problems among those vulnerable to poverty.

2011-08-08 - European researchers driving road safetySafety while driving is paramount, and Europeans are making efforts to ensure our well-being in vehicles - whether we are behind the steering wheel or in a passenger seat. The project partners have pushed the envelope by developing an inexpensive optical sensor system for the windshields of small and medium-sized cars. This driver-assistance system will help reduce the number of accidents on the roads. ADOSE ('Reliable application specific detection of road users with vehicle on-board sensors') is funded under the 'Information and communication technologies' (ICT) Theme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) to the tune of EUR 6.1 million.

2011-08-04 - New bounds in magnetic writingThe computer files we use every day for both work and leisure are nothing more than streams of digital data made-up of zeros and ones. These zeros and ones are found on a thin magnetic layer on a computer's hard disk, where magnetic domains pointing upwards represent a one and magnetic domains pointing down the way represent a zero. The size of these magnetic domains has now reached a few tens of nanometres, meaning we can squeeze a terabyte of data into the space of just four square centimetres. Whilst it sounds impressive, this 'miniaturisation' poses numerous problems for physicists and engineers. The fast-paced and ever-expanding information technology industry now demands that each piece of information is written on these tiny magnetic bits one at a time, and as quickly and energy efficiently as possible.
Más información2011-08-12 - Scientists go with the flow of liquid particlesA team of Austrian researchers has made an intriguing discovery about how particles in liquids can form in an organised fashion. Writing in the journal Physical Review Letters, the scientists, from Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna) and the University of Vienna, found that a liquid does not necessarily need to be made up of a disordered bunch of particles. Their research uncovered mysterious structures formed by tiny particles floating in liquids. It seems that under mechanical strain, particle clusters in liquids can spontaneously form strings and dramatically change the properties of the liquid.
Más información2011-08-25 - Faster and cheaper data storage thanks to materials research breakthroughEU-funded researchers from Germany, France and the United Kingdom have engineered a material that exhibits a rare and versatile trait in magnetism at room temperature. Writing in the journal Nature Materials, the team explain how this unique 'multiferroic' property present in the material could potentially be fashioned for use in quick and cost-effective data storage. A multiferroic material has both the ability to be electrically (ferroelectric) as well as magnetically (ferromagnetic) charged. Its magnetisation is controlled by electricity. The study was given a EUR 10 million boost from the European Commission under the ELISA ('European light sources activities - synchrotrons and free electron lasers') project, which was funded under the 'Research Infrastructures' Theme of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The team also received a EUR 2 148 796 European Research Council Advanced Grant as part of the project FEMMES ('FerroElectric Multifunctional tunnel junctions for MEmristors and Spintronics').

2011-08-02 - X-ray images unlock mysteries of black holesScientists have been brought a step closer to understanding two of the biggest mysteries in astrophysics, thanks to new observations from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Chandra X-ray observatory; the space-based satellite launched by NASA in 1999 is capable of making observations with X-rays, something not possible within the Earth's X-ray absorbing atmosphere. These recent X-ray images show the flow of hot gas towards a black hole, and allow two fundamental problems in modern astrophysics to be tackled: understanding how black holes grow, and how matter behaves in their intense gravity. The scientists, from the Universities of Alabama, California, and Michigan in the United States, published the results of their study in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Más información2011-08-08 - Sigh of relief for astronomers on oxygen space searchAn international team of astronomers has made the first undisputed detection of oxygen molecules in space. Using data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Herschel space observatory, the largest astronomical telescope ever launched, the Herschel Oxygen Project team was able to see molecules of oxygen in the nearby Orion star-forming complex. This new research, published in The Astrophysical Journal, solves a mystery that has puzzled astronomers for decades. Although previous studies have shown that atomic oxygen exists in warm regions of space, until now no searches have turned up oxygen in its molecular form - two atoms of oxygen bonded together.

The extraordinary find is thought to be have once been a massive star before turning into the much smaller diamond planet. Writing in the journal Science, the astronomers, from Australia, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States, explain that they first detected an unusual star called a pulsar using the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Parkes radio telescope in Australia. They then followed up this sighting using the Lovell radio telescope in the United Kingdom and one of the Keck telescopes in Hawaii.

2011-08-09 - Offshore wind farm promotes biodiversityNew European research has shown that a North Sea wind farm has little negative effect on the fauna around it. In fact, researchers found that the presence of the wind farm actually provided a new natural habitat for organisms living on the seabed. Researchers in the Netherlands from IMARES (Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies) at Wageningen UR (University and Research centre), the Bureau Waardenburg and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) analysed the short-term ecological effects of the wind farm that was built near Windpark Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ), the first large-scale offshore wind farm built off the Dutch North Sea coast. The farm has the total capacity to provide energy for up to 100,000 households.
Más información2011-08-12 - Biofuels boost from European researchersDespite being an attractive energy source in both environmental and economic terms, biofuels can have a corrosive effect on engines, a fact that has caused many European consumers to lose confidence in this form of clean energy. But now a consortium of researchers from the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Finland and the United Kingdom has come up with a solution that could eliminate this problem and restore faith in biofuels. Biofuels are derived from plants and naturally absorb CO2, making them far cleaner and more widely available than oil sands for example. However they contain a high amount of water and oxygen which has a corrosive effect on engines. Hybrid car fuels such as the E10, which is a mixture of 10 % ethanol and 90 % gasoline, have quickly become unpopular in parts of Europe. A recent poll showed that around 70 % of German motorists are suspicious of bioethanol and believe that it is damaging to car engines.

An outcome of the BIOP@SS project, the results lay the technical foundations for such documents, helping the region move towards electronic communication and away from paper correspondence that burdens both the environment and our pockets. Current data show that there are 380 million ID cards in circulation in 27 EU Member States. BIOP@SS is supported by the EUREKA network that promotes advanced cooperative research and development in microelectronics; around EUR 6 million of the funding is covered by the EUREKA clusters CATRENE/MEDEA+.

2011-08-22 - Open source publishing helping to realise Digital Agenda aims
One positive aspect of the Internet's innovative capacity for rapid change has been the dawn of open access publishing that has came to prominence over the last decade. Leading the way is the non-profit organisation Creative Commons, which has just launched a new book showcasing how copyright, content sharing and collaboration can lead innovation in the digital age. Directly in line with the European Commission's Digital Agenda strategy, which aims to make the Internet as fast as possible to foster economic growth and inspire job creation, as well as ensuring all citizens have access to the content and services they need, the Creative Commons project has had a direct impact on EU-funded research.

A groundbreaking technique to produce real-time, high-resolution images of distant galaxies has been developed by astronomers thanks to EU-funding. Radio telescopes around the world can now simultaneously observe the most remote objects in the universe and create high resolution images – a level of detail equivalent to identifying a football on the moon. The technique, called Electronic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (e-VLBI), helps to reveal clues on how galaxies are formed by allowing astronomers to receive and process data in near real-time as an experiment is running, thanks to high speed optical networks. This allows multiple radio telescopes throughout the world to work together to simulate one giant telescope. This not only improves the quality of observation results but also helps to maximise the return on investment in radio telescopes. Two high- capacity electronic communications networks projects, EXPReS and NEXPReS, which have received €7.4 million in EU funding, are supporting the development and use of e-VLBI astronomy. Developing e-Infrastructures to build Europe's innovative advantage is one of the priorities of the Digital Agenda for Europe (see IP/10/581, MEMO/10/199 and MEMO/10/200).

An EU-funded project is aiming to make self-service terminals, such as public transport ticket vending machines or public information kiosks and cash dispensers, more accessible for the one in six Europeans who have a disability or the 87 million Europeans aged 65 and over. According to an EU study, only 38% of bank cash machines (automated teller machines or ATMs) across the EU provide voice capabilities to customers with disabilities, far behind the US (61%) and Canada (nearly all ATMs). The European Commission is contributing €3.41 million, half of the overall budget, to the "APSIS4All" project which aims to design and validate personalised interfaces, including contactless cards, to help overcome existing accessibility barriers. Trials will begin in cash dispensers in Barcelona, Spain from September 2011 and at ticket vending machines in Paderborn, Germany from January 2012, and will run for three years.

2011-08-22 - EU Globalisation Fund support for workers increases three-fold in 2010 to over € 83 million
Nearly 23 700 workers dismissed due to economic crisis and major structural changes in world trade patterns were helped by the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) last year, according to a report adopted today by the European Commission – more than double the number of workers helped by the Fund in 2009. The € 83.5 million paid out by the EU's Globalisation Fund to nine Member States are intended to help the national authorities as they support dismissed workers in finding new job opportunities.

2011-08-31 - Final assessment of the 6th Environment Action Programme shows progress in environment policy – but with shortfalls in implementation
Over the past decade the 6th Community Environment Action Programme (EAP) has helped environment legislation to tackle almost all areas of the environment. This is evident from the final assessment of the 6th EAP (2002-2012) adopted today. Major accomplishments in the field of environment during the past ten years have been the extension of the Natura 2000 network to cover almost 18% of the EU's land area, the introduction of a comprehensive chemicals policy, and policy action on climate change. However, there is progress to be made in implementing agreed EU objectives and rules and in improving biodiversity protection, soil and water quality. The decoupling of resource use from economic growth has not led to a decrease in overall resources use.

2011-08-01 - European Campus of Excellence summer school in Portugal!
This summer, international students and leading scientists will be heading to Portugal where a prestigious summer school in genome biology and evolution is about to get under way. From 1 to 18 August, the European Campus of Excellence (ECE) Genome Biology and Evolution summer school will be held in Portugal's Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC); this is the first visit to the Iberian Peninsula for the summer school. The aim of the event is to bring together talented European graduate students and Europe's top scientists.
Más información2011-08-09 - EU funds new research project to respond to unexpected epidemic threats such as E.coli
The European Commission has decided to allocate an additional €12 million from the EU's Research Framework Programme to reinforce Europe's capacity for tackling pathogens like the virulent Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria that recently infected close to 4,000 people in Europe and killed 46. This autumn, a cross-border consortium called ANTIGONE will start work on research aimed at getting as full a scientific picture as possible of the new E. coli strain – to which approximately €2.1 million will be specifically dedicated - and of a range of other virulent pathogens that could pose a threat to human health. By better understanding these pathogens, scientists can go on to develop ways to tackle them - the research will focus on ways to prevent future epidemics and deal with new outbreaks. The consortium will work in close collaboration with another project selected for funding earlier, PREDEMICS.

2011-08-30 - Electronic identification of bovines to further strengthen food safety and animal health in the EU
The European Commission today adopted a proposal that will, when implemented, further enhance food safety and better safeguard animal health in the EU.In particular, the Commission proposal provides the legal framework for the introduction, for the first time and on a voluntary basis, of an electronic identification system (EID) for bovine animals. Bovine EID is already used in several EU Member States on a private basis mainly for farm management purposes. Its implementation on a wider scale will strengthen the current traceability system for bovine animals and food products (e.g. beef) making it faster and more accurate. Finally, it may bring benefits to farmers and other stakeholders as it will reduce the administrative burden through the simplification of the current administrative procedures. Despite its voluntary character, the Commission proposal allows Member States to introduce a mandatory regime at national level.
